The month of July is another busy one for road races, with two evening mid-week EMGPs, two Sunday NRRL races and the Newport Carnival to report, plus some impressive individual race performances by Helen Heley, and Julie-Ann Hammond.
EMGP Milton Keynes 10k - Tuesday July 1st

Another hot evening greeted the eighteen strong Silson contingent at the Milton Keynes 10k. The race is run on the Redway paths, although flat, quite often twisty. Continuing to try and give a mention to everyone in green who competed during the East Midlands Grand prix Series. Tracey Turner came home in 354th place timing 58.59, followed closely by Rosemary Heley 59.07, holding on to her U/20 series 2nd place standing. In 367th place was Humphrey Marten 61.53, with Sarah de Boer 5 seconds and two places behind.
Newport Carnival 5k - Saturday July 5th
This popular event produces some fast times, attracting a good standard of runner from across the country. Run on closed roads and is also a point to point race. Four Silson runners took advantage of this local race and returned some impressive times. Mark Conway 21st in 17.14 came away with a PB. Closely matched Steve Wareham and Simon Storer, Steve 63rd in 18,42, three places behind was Simon pleased with his 18.53. Also running for Silson was Paul Rose 182nd timing 23.33.
England Masters 10k at the Great North 10k - Sunday 6th July

Having qualified way back in May last year, this race felt a long time coming. The field was expected to be 10,000 (roughly 50% female) and an undulating course, that slowly rose towards the finish, added to the challenge. I decided to race it, rather than run for a time, and tracked another F50 for most of the race. With a belly full of nerves, I had gone out hard to keep up and felt strong going through 5k in 19:25. I couldn’t quite hold on at the end; nevertheless, I was absolutely thrilled to secure 3rd in age group and 33rd female overall (40:20).

NRRL Wellingborough 5 - Sunday 13th July

Run from the impressive Old Grammarians sports grounds, the race takes runners out and around the village of Sywell. An early start for the six Silson runners, which would have helped with the hot weather conditions. Rob Pardon led the green vests home coming 84th in 38.14. Susan Mulligan again running strongly was 105th timing 39.46. Madeleine Moutrie and Sue Torrance had a battle, Madeleine 135th in 43.54 was chased by Sue 5 seconds and a place behind. Despite the evening’s showery skies, the final race of the Northants County Championships went ahead on 29th July at the Corby Athletics Track. Silson AC was proudly represented by Julie-Ann, who secured Gold in the Female Masters 3,000m with a time of 12:27.
